Located between Sturgis and Fort Meade, South Dakota, the Bear Butte Creek Historic Preserve helps preserve, protect, and utilize key historical elements for education and tourism.
It has an extensive history that includes the Crow, Cheyenne, and Lakota (Sioux) Indian tribes as well as earlier North American humans that may predate the aforementioned tribes by several thousand years. Additionally, the U.S. Cavalry presence in the late 1800s added another layer of history, including a firing range and “Soap Suds Row.”
The Bear Butte Creek Historic Preservation Council was established as a South Dakota nonprofit corporation in 2020, received its 501(c)3 status in June 2020. It is governed by a diverse Board of Directors including multiple stakeholders.
We rely on grants, donations, and volunteers’ time and talent to preserve, protect, and promote the Bear Butte Creek Historic Preserve.
