Plants

Professor Mark Gabel from Black Hills State University cataloged the plants growing in the Bear Butte Creek Historic Preserve in 2021. Gabel conducted five counts during the 2021 growing season, including April 3, May 24, July 9, August 3, and September 28, so as to observe each plant in their various stages of flowering and seeding. 135 species were documented, including 86 native species.

Animals

A bird count was conducted by Eric Davis in December 2020, as part of the 2021 Sturgis Christmas Bird Count. Davis walked 6.2 miles down Bear Butte Creek from the Sturgis City Park, through the Bear Butte Creek Historic Preserve, to SD Highway 79. During the 3.5-hour walk, Davis counted 18 different bird species, including an unusual pair of Wilson’s Snipe.
