About Us

Establishment

The Bear Butte Creek Historic Preservation Council was established as a South Dakota nonprofit corporation in 2020, received its 501(c)3 status in June 2020. It is governed by a diverse Board of Directors including stakeholder members from the following organizations:

  • Bureau of Land Management
  • ­Meade 46-1 School District
  • ­City of Sturgis
  • ­Black Hills Trails
  • ­South Dakota State Historical Society
  • ­South Dakota Archaeological Society
  • ­Dr. Linea Sundstrom
  • ­Bear Butte State Park
  • ­Sturgis & Meade County Historical Society
  • ­Ft. Meade Museum
  • ­Black Hills State University
  • ­Ft. Meade VA Medical Center
  • ­South Dakota National Guard
  • ­Interested Individuals

Our purpose is to preserve, protect, and promote the history of the Bear Butte Creek Historic Preserve.

Location

The Preserve is located on 187 acres of leased school district property within the city limits of Sturgis, South Dakota, north of SD Hwy 34, between Sturgis and Fort Meade. The grounds are accessible via the Centennial Trail and the Centennial Bike Path. Parking is available at the Fort Meade Trailhead of the Centennial Trail located at the intersection of Old Soldier Road and Hwy 34 (East Lazelle Street). A pedestrian underpass connects the parking lot to the trails and Preserve.
